Bitesize Insights · UK company reporting
Small companies and micro-entities have been given breathing space. The government has paused the requirement for them to file profit and loss accounts with Companies House from April 2028.
Companies House confirmed the decision on 23 October 2026. It is a pause in implementation, not confirmation that the requirement has been permanently cancelled.
What changed, at a glance
P&L filing expansion
The planned April 2028 requirement for small companies and micro-entities is on hold.
Existing accounts obligations
The pause does not remove balance sheet filing or other existing requirements.
Software filing from April 2028
Commercial software and iXBRL accounts filing remain on the timetable.
What does this mean for you?
Eligible companies can continue to remove their P&L information from accounts filed at Companies House after 1 April 2028. Abridged accounts also remain an option where applicable.
The government is exploring how to streamline Companies House and HMRC filing through its “tell Government once” ambition. This announcement does not remove existing accounts preparation, tax or filing obligations.
What should you do now?
- Confirm your filing options. Ask your accountant which accounts and disclosures your company must submit.
- Check software readiness. The move to commercial software and iXBRL accounts filing remains planned for 1 April 2028. Companies House web and paper routes will close for accounts submissions.
- Keep useful management information. Public filing requirements are only one part of the picture. You still need reliable numbers for cash, funding and business decisions.
